MONITORING YOUR BLOOD SUGAR
If you have diabetes, you may need to monitor your blood sugar
(blood glucose) levels are within your target range indicated by your provider.
Testing will tell you your blood glucose level at any one time.
Keeping blood sugar levels in a healthy range
prevents low glucose levels, which can cause a loss of the ability to function
normally and prevents high glucose levels as that causes severe complications
and damage.
Here are some of the devastating effects on your body from
high blood sugar:
- Nerves – damages your nerves called neuropathy that can
cause pain and reduce sensation, leading to falls with injuries and severe loss
of mobility.
- Vision- damages your retina, causing blindness.
- Kidneys- damages your kidneys by making the kidneys filter
too much blood and start to leak and protein in the urine.
- Liver- damages to your liver causing elevated liver enzymes,
fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, cancer, and acute liver failure. Diabetes
raises your risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition in which
excess fat builds up in your liver even if you drink little or no alcohol
